GPC Giant Pumpkin Contest

2008 Official Kansas Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off Contest
Giant Pumpkin Commonwealth

I hope you were here for the weighing of the giant pumpkins on Sat. Oct. 4th, 2008.

As usual with giant pumpkins, you never know if you can get them to the contest before they split from their sheer weight. Two top pumpkins in the state that we knew of, one at 1200 lbs and another at 800 lbs, couldn’t make the contest.

So Grey Steinke of Oklahoma City, OK was the lucky first time grower that brought in this 295 lb pumpkin to win our 2008 contest. Here’s the photo of me giving Greg his $250 check. Grey has the passion to grow the giants, so I’m sure he’ll be back with a larger pumpkin next year.

The next five pumpkins ranged between 160 and 100 lbs. But the favorites were the three generation growers from Hillsboro-grandmother, son and grandson that won the 7th, 8th and 9th place ribbons. We hope to see them again next year too!

Plan to join us Oct. 3, 2009

Smoky Hill Bison is an official weigh-off site for the international Great Pumpkin Commonwealth Club. This organization holds contests all over the world with growers vying to raise the largest pumpkin in the world.

Want to grow a large pumpkin this next year? Bring it to the contest! We have ribbons for the top ten winners, plus cash prizes for the top three weights.

It doesn’t matter if your pumpkin weighs 40 lbs or 1000 lbs, this is for fun!

Bring your pumpkin to the Visitors Center between noon and 2 pm. The weighing and measurements start at 2 pm. There will be a skid loader and help to unload your giant pumpkin if it’s too heavy to lift.
