Turning the field over to the Buffalo

We start taking down signs, etc tomorrow, but visitors are still welcome to walk though the maze at half price this weekend. Just no more rides on the zip line, nor into the pasture to see the buffalo…

They’ve closed their pasture gate for the season!

After a bumper crop of pumpkins and vines- the pumpkin field is almost empty except for a few rejected leftovers. Of course that’s the goal of this farm operation, which is to sell the whole crop. But it looks so bare now…

Frost hit here the other night so the Sudan Grass (which the maze field was planted in) has ”freeze dried”, or lost it’s moisture.

As soon as we can clean out all the signs in the maze, and the activities in the field, it’s ready for the buffalo to move in and take over the field.

They are eyeing those few remaining pumpkins….

Wow! What a weekend!

We had people galore on the farm this last weekend enjoying the rides, maze, and the zip line. I lost count of the number of buffalo burgers I grilled and brought over to the concession stand. Everybody loved them!

We also started serving buffalo chili since the weather has cooled down. That hit the spot as the sun went down in the evening and people were waiting for it to get dark…to go through the maze again with a glow stick for the second time.

The weather looks great for our last maze weekend. The cool weather makes people think of fall and the last of the pumpkins will be picked for porch displays. We haven’t had a freeze yet, so the maze is still green and pumpkins are still firm.

I’m guessing that 70 percent of our pumpkins have been sold out of the field, which is what we want to see by the end of the season. After all, the farmer’s goal is to sell his/her crop. We’ll sell another 10-15 percent this final weekend. The buffalo are hoping there are a few pumpkins left for them though!

Groups of Life

After a busy weekend, Patty and I actually enjoyed two days of rain and solitude in our “pasture office”. Of course that meant rescheduling school field trips, but better to postpone a week than cancel, or fight the mud.

Today the sun was out and we hosted two groups on opposite ends of life- a preschool, and an senior day care group- many that were in wheel chairs. We enjoyed both groups, and hope their time on the farm brought them all moments of fun, and lasting memories.

The weather turned absolutely gorgeous today, and the forecast is that this great weather will stay with us through Sunday.

Taking off on the Zip Line

This last weekend we hosted the Official Kansas Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off Contest. We had eleven entries, with the winner actually coming from Oklahoma to win the top $250 prize. Please look under the GPC page to see a photo of the 295 lb. winner.

The other winner this last weekend was the Zip Line. Kids AND their grandparents rode the line for an exciting ride. For many it was the highlight to their trip to the farm. Plan to ride it this season too!

Plan to attend our “Salute to the Military” this coming weekend too. All active military personnel get in free when they show their ID. This is our way of saying THANKS for what they have done for us and our country!

The Maze is open!

Today is opening day for the maze and pumpkin patch. The zip line has also made it’s debut, and there’s been a line at times since its so popular.

We have a great variety of pumpkins this year, plus we’ve picked and piled them at the Visitors Center and Pumpkin Station for those that don’t want to wander thru the field.

Sun for the Mud- Sept. 13, 2008

We’ve had lots of rain this past week and things are muddy. But hey, the sun is coming out for the next week and we’re getting signs, scarecrows, and fun activities in place for the opening of the maze to the public on Sept. 27th.

Plan to be here opening day for the debut of the Zip Line!

Here in Kansas, the weather changes quickly. Although it is nice and hot outside right now, we know that in a blink of an eye it will be fall again. We hope you will come join us in our fall maze tradition.
